40 yrs on, Jain Samaj building in Kashi freed from squatters | India News

VARANASI: The Varanasi police commissionerate recently freed an old building belonging to the Jain Samaj from the possession of unauthorised people living there as students for the past 40 years. The building, constructed as a hostel in the city’s Lanka area, was donated to Sanmati Jain Niketan in 1953 by philanthropist Sahu Shanti Prasad Jain.
“It was freed with the help of police from illegal encroachment by anti-social elements. We were trying this for the past 40 years but failed,” Deepak Jain, Shri Digambar Jain Samaj Kashi chief, said on Tuesday. He added that the anti-social elements used to consume non-veg food and liquor in the building besides littering the premises of the Jain temple with leftovers and empty liquor bottles.
“Now, the building will be used for social welfare,” said commissioner of police, A Satish Ganesh. tnn
